HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - It was a blast for a ton of Alabama students at the Space and Rocket Center this week during Space Academy. One hundred and twenty students across Alabama were chosen by the state legislature to attend Space Academy at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. "We are so honored that the Alabama legislature has said, 'Let's send you to Space Academy and let you see what goes on in Alabama,' it's kinda like made in Alabama,” Space and Rocket Center spokesperson Tim Hall said. “Many people don't realize Alabama's contribution to the space program." Throughout the week, the students learned the ins-and-outs of the space program and how Alabama plays a part. "This is where they're from this is what these young people are about,” Hall said. “It's their heritage. This is where they really, really come from being Alabamians." The students got hands-on experience by actually launching the rockets they built themselves. "Well we sat in a room and built them from scratch so being able to see them fly and go in the air was awesome,” said Space Academy student Danielle Guy. Of course seeing a real life launch was cool, but they learned so much more during their time at the Space and Rocket Center. "The friendship and meeting all these new people and then designing rockets, it'll leave an impact on my life,” said Space Academy student Jacob Roper. And who knows, some of the Academy graduates might just be our eyes and ears on the Final Frontier one day. "These young people are going to make a huge difference for us in the years to come here in the state of Alabama,” said Hall.
