HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – This week, students from across Alabama are attending Space Academy for Leading Alabama Students (S.A.L.S.A.), a program funded by the state legislature. The 136 students from 83 cities in 89 legislative districts are taking part in the second year of the program that gives Alabama students access to Space Camp’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics education and leadership training. Middle-school students living in Alabama were eligible to apply for this special Space Camp program. Once they applied, state legislators could nominate two students from their legislative district to receive a scholarship to attend S.A.L.S.A. The scholarship recipients were nominated based on their academic transcripts, extracurricular activities and interests and three essays. S.A.L.S.A. students arrived at Space Camp Sunday for a full week of activities and are set to graduate Friday at 11 a.m., in the U.S. Space & Rocket Center’s Davidson Center for Space Exploration.
