Things to Do for the Holidays in Huntsville

There's no better way to spend the busy holiday season than discovering fun new family traditions at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. Here's a list of things to do in Huntsville for the holidays:

1) Tree Display

See our 35 foot tall outdoor holiday display, which features over 20,000 lights! The display will be open November 30 to December 25.

2) Robot Holiday

Visit our lobby area to see our 3D printed robotics display! This display is located in our robotics classroom, immediately past the museum gift shop. It features a variety of robots, including Rosie, who will sing carols to our guests!

3) Spark!Lab

This interactive space allows visitors of all ages to become engineers as they work on design challenges, from cleaning up the ocean to creating a flying machine. The hands-on activities inspire students of all ages to use critical thinking skills to solve problems and realize they, too, can be an inventor.

Spark!Lab was developed by the Smithsonian Institution’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation, and includes an ever-changing array of themes and activities focusing on science, technology, engineering and math. Visitors will also use art, history and creativity as they learn real-world applications for what they’re learning in the classroom.

4) Art of the Airport Tower

Explore Smithsonian photographer Carolyn Russo’s “Art of the Airport Tower” during your visit to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. This featured exhibit takes visitors on a photographic journey to airports in the United States and around the globe.

The first impression travelers have when they reach a new city or country may well be the tower; as such, it is often an embodiment of important symbols and values. Russo explores the varied forms and functions of air traffic control towers through aviation history.

These 50 captivating photographs and informative captions reveal the architectural, cultural and technological significance of each of the featured towers. This one-of-a-kind view of airport towers will change the way you think about flight.

Included with admission.

5) Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Having taken her first steps into a larger world in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” Rey continues her epic journey with Finn, Poe and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the saga. See it in 70MM IMAX!

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi," will open December 14 in the Spacedome IMAX® Theater.

Tickets may be purchased here.

6) Above and Beyond.

Race at the speed of sound, soar to orbit for a spectacular 360-degree view of Earth and climb aboard a fascinating journey to Mars. From flying cars and supersonic planes to space elevators and mega-rockets, “Above and Beyond” takes you faster, farther and higher for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“Above and Beyond” challenges guests to learn about the new ways airplanes and spacecraft are designed and built with methods like 3D printing, creative wing shapes and lighter materials. Each one of the five interactive galleries - UP, FASTER, HIGHER, FARTHER and SMARTER - features simulations and design activities related to real-life engineering challenges in the aerospace industry.

“Above and Beyond” is produced by Evergreen Exhibitions in association with Boeing, in collaboration with NASA and the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.
