Are cell phones and tablets permitted at camp?

To help ensure a positive, engaging, and distraction-free experience, we are sharing our NEW Camper Phone Policy in advance.

Click HERE for a message from our Vice President of Space Camp, Robin Soprano, about this new policy.
We encourage campers to leave phones and other personal technology at home whenever possible. However, we understand that some campers are traveling internationally or flying to Huntsville as unaccompanied minors and may need a phone for travel purposes.

If your camper brings a phone to camp, the following policy will apply:

  • Upon arrival, all phones will be secured in a locked, signal-blocking pouch.
    • Pouches are provided by the camp at no cost and are individually numbered.
  • Campers are responsible for their assigned pouch and are encouraged to power off their phones while stored to conserve battery life.
  • Campers will be allowed limited phone access once per day during a designated prep-for-bed time in the evening.
    • During this time, staff will unlock pouches for personal cell phone use.
  • Campers who need a phone to monitor a medical condition must make arrangements in advance with our Camp Health Nurse by emailing Camphealth@spacecamp.com
  • Campers without a personal phone may use camp-provided phones for domestic calls during the designated prep-for-bedtime.
  • Camp will return personal phones before Camp graduation.
  • Campers traveling as unaccompanied minors will be allowed phone access to coordinate travel and departure details after graduation. If a camper remains overnight due to a late departure, their phone will be re-secured before bedtime.
  • A $50 replacement fee will be charged for lost or damaged pouches.
  • All other internet-connected electronic devices, such as tablets and smart watches, are prohibited.

This policy allows campers to call family while helping them fully engage in the camp experience. We appreciate your support in setting these expectations with your camper before arrival.
