Liverpool (WSYR-TV) – Three local teachers are suiting up for the experience of a lifetime.
Sara Pieklik from Liverpool Middle School, Martha McGarry from East Syracuse Elementary, and Kathleen Boyce from Lincoln Middle School are headed to Honeywell Educators at the US Space and Rocket Center in Alabama.
They will join more than 200 teachers from 24 countries around the world at next month’s space academy.
The program helps middle school math and science teachers become more effective in science, technology, engineering, and math.
“In 8th grade we do scientific notation and say we can measure really large numbers in space so to bring back those large numbers to work with them will be cool,” Pieklik said.
Each teacher will get real-life astronaut training, including a high-performance jet simulation and land and water survival training.
