Rocket Center hosts Pass the Torch talk, Lego Saturn V Build and Great American Eclipse Training

Huntsville, Ala. – The U.S. Space & Rocket Center will host multiple events Thursday, Aug. 10, that are free and open to the public.

Beginning at 4 p.m., Geek Out Huntsville will go head-to-head with another team of builders as they construct LEGO Saturn V models underneath the National Historic Landmark Saturn V moon rocket in the Davidson Center for Space Exploration. The Tennessee Valley LEGO Club and special guests, including Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle, will join in the build. Geek Out Huntsville plans to live steam the event to Facebook.

The build takes place during the Rocket Center’s weekly Biergarten event, so authentic German food and beverages will be available for purchase. Each week, the Rocket Center partners with a charity, and a portion of the proceeds from this week’s Biergarten will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association Mid-South Chapter.

At 5:30 p.m., the Rocket Center is holding the third of four training programs on the Great American Eclipse event that takes place Aug. 21. Dr. Dennis Gallagher will provide training and information about his work as a magnetospheric physicist with Marshall Space Flight Center’s Heliophysics and Planetary Science Branch. NASA astronomer Dr. Bill Cooke and Solar Scientist Mitzi Adams will conclude the series on Aug. 17.

At 6:30 p.m., Dr. Valerie Neal, the chair of the Space History Department at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, will give a talk as part of the Pass the Torch lecture series, Dr. Neal will discuss her book, “Spaceflight in the Shuttle Era and Beyond: Redefining Humanity’s Purpose in Space,” and will host a signing event immediately following.
