The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is partnering with Cyber Huntsville and the University of Alabama in Huntsville to hold the inaugural session of U.S. Cyber Camp this week. More than 30 students from across Alabama are taking part in this program, which introduces them to the fundamentals of cyber security and provides information about the varied careers in cyber-related fields. For this weeklong program, the students are staying on site at the Rocket Center while receiving instruction from UAH graduate students and professionals in cyber security. Activities include basic computer science, building a computer, demonstrations of cyberattacks and simulations of defensive cybersecurity strategies. The coursework for the program is from the AF Association CyberPatriot program with additions provided by UAH that focus details on cyber security issues related to federal agencies on Redstone Arsenal. The mission of U.S. Cyber Camp addresses a predicted workforce shortage of skilled labor in the field of cybersecurity by inspiring high school students with an interest in science and technology to go into fields of computer science, information assurance or cybersecurity. Cyber Huntsville and its members will be on hand during the week to interact with the Cyber Camp students, culminating in a cybersecurity job fair at the end of the program. In addition to the specialized curriculum, Cyber Camp students will learn how cybersecurity integrates with projects like NASA’s Space Launch System, the FBI’s cyber forensics program or America’s missile defense program. Leadership and teamwork exercises are also included in the weeklong program, with a focus on 21st century skills. Media is invited to attend and the best opportunities are the WiFi Analyzer Scavenger Hunt Tuesday at 1:15 p.m., and the UAH SMAP STEM Roadshow beginning Wednesday at 12:45 p.m. The graduation ceremony for U.S. Cyber Camp will take place Friday, July 28 at 2 p.m. in the auditorium of the Education Training Facility at the Rocket Center.
