New Homeschool Program

Coming January 2026 Museum Education will be hosting homeschool programming inside our Space Works Maker Lab.

* Disclaimer: Because of the technological equipment and the dexterity and skills necessary to safely operate classroom tools, these activities are designed for students aged 12 and older (middle and high school).

Homeschool Computer Programming & Electronics: Join us for a two-day course inside the U.S. Space & Rocket Center’s NEW Space Works: A Makers Lab. Homeschool students ages 12 to 14 will explore introductory coding and hardware by learning to operate a Raspberry Pi microcomputer and solderless breadboard. Through engaging, hands-on activities students will explore fundamental circuitry, programming, and coding concepts. To provide a historical perspective, each class day will feature a guided museum field trip to explore artifacts that directly connect to the maker lab technology.

Topics to Explore:

Day 1 (2 hours): Introduction to Raspberry Pi Hardware and Basic Programming: Homeschool students will learn how to work with the components of a Raspberry Pi microcomputer and breadboard hardware and begin basic coding practices. In addition to learning about how computers are used in space and onboard the International Space Station, they will build a physical circuit and integrate it into a piece of wearable technology.

Day 2 (2 hours): Raspberry Pi and Robotic Coding Challenges: Homeschool students will explore the breadboard, the industry standard solderless tool for quickly prototyping circuits and safely connecting components. Students will program the Raspberry Pi to control an external LED light connected via the breadboard. Students will write code to flash the LED in specific patterns, challenging them to send and decode simple Morse Code messages. We will challenge students to create a coded maze for our Ozobot mini-robots and learn to visually code simple commands.
